Previous year  Time and Work Question and Answer

Question-1)

A alone can do a piece of work in 6 days, B alone can do the same work in 12 days. In how many days can A and B together completes the same work?

A) 5 days
B) 4 days
C) 3 days
D) 2 days
E) None of these

Ans: B

Solution:

A’s 1 day’s work = (1 / 6)
B’s 1 day’s work = (1 / 12)
(A + B)’s 1 day’s work = $(1 / 6) + (1 / 12) = (1 / 4)$
Therefore (A + B) will complete the work in 4 days.

Question-2)

3 men can do a piece of work in 18 days. 6 children can also do that work in 18 days. 4 men and 4 children together will finish the work in how many days?

A) 10
B) 6
C) 12
D) 9
E) None of these

Ans: D

Solution:

Using the below formulae $M1×D1×W2 = M2×D2×W1$
⇒ $3 × 18 × 1 = 6 × D2 ×1$
⇒ D2 = 9 days

Question-3)

Ravi gets Rs. 110 for every day that he works. If he earns Rs. 2750 in a month of 31 days, for how many days did he work?

A) 25 days
B) 28 days
C) 26 days
D) 24 days
E) None of these

Ans: A

Solution:

Required number of days = $2750 / 110$ = 25 days

Question-4)

A can do $1/3$ of a work in 5 days and B can do $2/5$ of the work in 10 days. In how long both A and B together can take the necessary steps?

A) $31/4$ days

B) $24/5$ days

C) $75/8$ days

D) 15 days

Solution:
Answer:C

$1/3$ work is done by A in 5 days.
Whole work will be done by A in 15 days.
$2/5$ work is done by B in 10 days.
Whole work will be done by B in $(10×5/2)$ day’s     i.e 25 days
(A+B) ’s 1 days work = $(1/15+1/25)$ = $8/75$
∴A and B can do the work in $75/8$ days

Question-5)

A and B can do a bit of work in 45 days and 40 days. they started the work together however A leaves after a few days and B completed the remaining work in 23 days. After how long did A leaves?

A) $2/3$ days

B) 5 days

C) 9 days

D) 15 days

Answer : C
Solution:

Work done by B in 23 days = $(23 × 1/40) = 23/40$ ; remaining work = $(1- 23/40)= 17/40$
(A+B)’s 1 day work = $( 1/45 + 1/40)$ = ${8+9}/360$ = $17/360$
$17/360$ work is done by (A+B) in 1 day.
$17/40$ work is done by them in $(360/17 × 17/40)$ = 9 days
