UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2023

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Service Examination (CSE) every year to recruit candidates for center-level positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and related services. The IAS exam, regarded as one of the toughest exams in the country, consists of three levels: Preliminary, Main, and Personal Interview.

The Preliminary exam comprises two papers: Paper I, General Studies, and Paper II, CSAT, which include questions from General Knowledge, Quantitative aptitude, and Logical thinking sections. The IAS Exam (Prelims) contains multiple-choice or objective-style questions, and Negative Marking is applied only at this stage, deducting 1/3 (0.66) of the total marks for every incorrect answer.

Candidates must score at least 33% in the GS Paper II (CSAT), which has a qualifying component. Blind applicants receive an extra 20 minutes (Prelims) for all exams. Candidates must appear for the Civil Service preliminary exams to be evaluated. Preliminary exam scores are not considered when determining candidates’ eligibility for the Main exam.
