The global theme for World Wetlands Day 2022 is "Wetlands Action for People and Nature." The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the critical role that wetlands play in supporting people and our environment.

World Wetlands Day is observed to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The first celebration of World Wetlands Day took place in 1997.
