On February 1, 2023, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is commemorating its 47th Raising Day. Since its humble beginnings in 1978, with just seven surface platforms, the ICG has grown significantly, and now boasts 158 ships and 78 aircraft.
It is on track to meet its objective of having 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft by 2025. As the world's fourth-largest coast guard, the ICG has played a vital role in safeguarding India's coasts and enforcing regulations in its maritime zones.
The ICG was officially established on February 1, 1977, through the Coast Guard Act, 1978, which was passed by the Indian Parliament. The Ministry of Defence oversees its operations.
