Question

What is the name of the Indian state whose tea has recently been granted a European Geographical Indication (GI) tag?
  • Nilgiris
  • Darjeeling
  • Munnar
  • Kangra
Answer- D
The Kangra tea, which is a distinctive variety of tea grown in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh in India, has been granted a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Commission (EC).

The PGI status will become effective from April 11, 2023, according to the notification issued by the EC on March 22. This development comes amid the delay by the EC in granting a similar status to Basmati rice, which India had applied for in 2018.

However, the EU has requested India and Pakistan to hold discussions so that Basmati rice from Pakistan can also be recognized, but Pakistan is currently not meeting the necessary requirements for recognition.
