Indian chess player Vignesh NR has become the 80th Grandmaster of India after winning the 24th NordWest Cup 2023 at Bad Zwischenahn in Germany and defeating German IM Ilja Schneider.

Vignesh, who hails from Chennai, achieved this feat after crossing 2500 in live ratings. His elder brother Visakh NR had become India's 59th GM in 2019, making them the first brothers in India to become Grandmasters.

Vignesh earned his first GM-norm at the age of 17 years at the Qatar Masters in 2015, followed by his second GM-norm at the 24th Abu Dhabi Masters in 2017, and his final GM-norm at the 1st Gujarat GM Open 2018. He scored his fourth GM-norm at the Asian Continental 2019 at Xingtai, China.
