Following a 64-year delay, the Dalai Lama was finally presented with the 1959 Ramon Magsaysay Award by members of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation at his residence.
This award marked the spiritual leader's first international recognition for his outstanding leadership in spearheading the Tibetan community's valiant fight to protect their sacred religion which forms the bedrock of their culture and way of life.
The Ramon Magsaysay Award is presented across six categories namely government service, public service, community leadership, journalism, creative arts, and peace and international understanding. The award comes with a certificate, a medal, and a monetary prize for the recipient.
