A year after the proposal to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has confirmed that Aurangabad city will now be called Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Osmanabad city will be renamed as Dharashiv.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the proposal, stating that it has no objection to renaming the cities. The initial proposal was made during a cabinet meeting of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in June 2022, while Uddhav Thackeray was serving as the Chief Minister.
